Advice to Entrants of the Sully Show Gardening Section
Each entry in vegetables and fruit must consist of one cultivar only, except in class 410
401 & 402. A plate of 3 potatoes (one variety). (401 Coloured, 402 White). Merits:- Medium size tubers of approximately 175-225g each; shapely, clean; clear skinned, few eyes, no greening.
403. A plate of runner beans (6 minimum)-with stalk. Merits:- Long uniform, straight, shapely, fresh pods of good colour with stalks, uniform tails and no outward sign of seeds. No sign of stringiness or limpness when snapped.
404. 4 Onions - not to exceed 250g each in weight. Merits:- Firm, thin necked, blemish free with well ripened, unbroken skins free from damage or disease. Onions should have roots trimmed and necks neatly tied with uncoloured raffia. As near to 250g as possible, of good form and alike in size, shape and colour.
405. 3 Carrots. Merits:- Fresh, firm, long, smooth roots of good shape and colour. Free of pests, diseases and splits. Skins clean and bright with no evidence of side roots. Foliage trimmed to approx. 75mm.
406 and 407. A dish of 5 tomatoes, each with calyx. Merits:- Well shaped, clear skinned, blemish-free, ripe but firm, well coloured with calyces attached. Conforming to size requirements.
(407. Cherry - under 35mm.)
408. 1 head of garlic. Merits:- Well shaped, solid, clean, well ripened bulbs with thin necks, unbroken skins with dried stem of approximately 25mm. Roots removed
409. A dish of peas in pods (6 minimum). Merits:- Large long, fresh, smooth pods of good colour with bloom intact and with stalks, free from disease or pest damage and well filled with tender peas.
410. Mixed root crops. Merits:- Clear skinned, solid, shapely medium sized roots that are free of pest and disease damage.
411. 3 Courgettes. Merits:- Young and tender. Can be of any colour but of uniform shape and colour and well matched. 150mm long and approx. 35mm diameter. Round courgettes approx. 75mm diameter.
412. 6 Peppers hot (chilli). Merits:- Fresh, bright fruits with clear skins.
413. 3 Peppers sweet. Merits:- Fresh, bright fruits with clear skins.
421. A dish of culinary apples (3 minimum). Merits:- Large, shapely, solid fruits with undamaged eyes, stalks intact and clear unblemished skins of a colour characteristic of the cultivar.
422. A dish of dessert apples (3 minimum). Merits:- Optimum sized, firm, ripe, shapely fruits with eyes and stalks intact and clear unblemished skins of the natural colour characteristic of the cultivar.
423. A dish of pears dessert or culinary (3 minimum). Merits:- Large (for the cultivar), shapely fruits with undamaged eyes, stalks intact and clear unblemished skins of the natural colour characteristic of the cultivar.
424. A dish of soft fruit any variety- eg strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries - not less than 6ozs (175gm). Merits:- Fruit should be ripe, stalks and eyes intact, free of splits and blemishes. Fruits should be somewhat above average size for the cultivar.
425. A plate of plums dessert or culinary (6 minimum). Merits:- Large, firm, ripe fruits of good colour, with bloom intact and having stalks.
